Chapter 3, Pearl & Paul - Short Story #11

Chapter 3: Instilling Optimism

Yellow! She picked the colour yellow for me. Yellow symbolizes positivity, joyfulness, happiness, and energy. While that is how I felt during the entire duration of Pearl's writing event, when it was time to depart sadness struck me.

We all had to write a story based on the colour we picked, in my case Pearl picked it up for me. We were given a forty minutes slot to do this. Pondering about yellow and its significance, I decided my story has to be a heart warming happy reading experience because there's enough misery and suffering already in my life and I don't want to mess up the minds of readers, who in case decides to read my mediocre story, adding more agony to their lives. So, having fixed my mind on the color theme, I started writing a story about a sketch artist who explores caves to come up with a plot for his new comics. My pen flowed through the pages and before I could grasp the passage of time...

"Five more minutes, and no additional sheets!", Pearl cried out, letting us know that it's time to wrap our writing.

I quickly skimmed through what I had written and made some changes.

"Okay, please stop writing now. Don't make me feel like a school head master now, trying to grab your pens and notepads, forcing you to stop writing", she said jovially which made everyone laugh. Well, she is smart and funny.

"Now, we will take turns and let's read out the story that we wrote. After that, all others can provide constructive feedback."

I wasn't embarrassed to read out my story to everyone but it indeed was interesting to hear other participant's stories as they narrated one by one. It was even more intriguing to realize how like-minded aspiring writers came up with stories and how different colour could inspire different emotional plots. Pearl's writing event was certainly illuminating in all its sense. She concluded the event by requesting us to fill a google form. "Please ensure you fill the form whenever you're free."

"How do we all stay in touch? Is there a WhatsApp group for the writers group?" asks one participant. I turn towards Pearl to observe her response.

"Well, I have one group for my Book Club because I always get participants for my book club events and eventually we formed a group."

"Oh you have a book club?" asks another participant.

"Yeah, book club was the first group I created because I read a lot. I was just trying to create a writers club and thanks to you all today, we kickstarted our writers club. I will create a new group for writers club as well. Please make sure you fill the form and give your WhatsApp numbers."

All the participants exchange farewell greetings and began to depart while I packed my bag and assisted Pearl in getting her belongings, the color board, her laptop, tablet, book and the notepads. Usually, an emotionless being, I rather was excited in having attended this event and meeting new people, especially Pearl. And it was time to depart now.

"Alright Pearl, it was great meeting you. I learned a lot from you today. I guess, I'll see you around."

"Yeah it was a pleasure to meet you, Paul. Aren't you forgetting to ask something?"

I was confused. "What? Ask something?"

"Never mind. Would you mind staying back for a couple of minutes?"

To be continued…
