Each bounce seemed to echo like a heartbeat, mirroring the tension in the air.

From the title and book cover, Second Chance would seem like another romance-comedy novel. But only when you start to read the story you will realize that it's the after-marriage phase of the couple who met in a rom-com novel.

It's crucial to understand that everyone experiences and processes emotions differently.

Kavya and Karthik are the couple here. They've been together for more than three decades. Being the kids of business partners, they grew up as childhood friends, learning the intricacies of each other's soul and eventually getting married in their early twenties, with the consent of both their families. The couple has been happily married for more than a decade now and has even a son, Aditya. So, you must be thinking, it's all good and where's the story here? Well, that's where the author has decided to create one and begins the novel on a perilous note - the profound relationship is breaking apart after fourteen years of marriage. Kavya wants to move on from Karthik.

We must recognize and support the talents of those closest to us to build stronger, more fulfilling relationships.

From chapter one, the narrative, which is told from the perspective of Karthik, keeps underlining the discord between the couple through various incidents. Often switching to the past, the readers get a glimpse of Kavya and Karthik's coming of age but the story mostly focuses on Karthik's tireless attempts to fix the relationship and get back together as a family with Kavya. With the restriction of just over a hundred and fifty pages to craft the plot, the author has decided to jump timelines which is off-putting at times. Karthik's character and his actions to set things right, regardless of the gender, highly resonates with the reality for any human and leaves the reader in a thought process to retrospect his or her own life. Was Karthik successful in reconciling with Kavya or did the couple fall apart and get divorced? Did the story turn out to be a happy ending or heart breaking romance? You could read the novel to know the answers.

Sometimes, love means showing someone how much they mean to you, even if it's through gestures they might not fully understand at first.

The storytelling techniques employed by the author, compelling incidents woven to magnify the emotions and assist the story move forward with a sense of interest, are commendable and impressive. For instance, the very first chapter describes a sport match played by the couple through which their worsening relationship is told as an analogy. The writing skills definitely stands out. Perhaps, there could have been Kavya's perspective along with Karthik's, emphasizing the dichotomy. Furthermore, lack of characterization plays a significant factor in making this story disinterested and failing to provoke any emotions from the readers. The son and couple of other characters could have been developed more. Kavya and Karthik's childhood could have been explored more and delved into. Due to these shortcomings, the story only stands as a good novel and fails to make it to the greats.

Verdict: Read this book if you want to know what happens after a couple from a Rom-Com Novel gets married.
