Movie Suggestion #60: The Game (1997)

David Fincher

The Game (1997)

Available on: Netflix

Runtime: 2 hour 9 minutes

One word review: Mercurial!

IMDB: 7.7

The Game is a psychological thriller suspense film which stays completely true to it's genre. The movie starts off leisurely exposing the viewers to the pedantic nature of our protagonist and his quotidian activities. When the inciting incident kicks in, the story becomes completely unpredictable and incredible.

Favorite Movie Quotes:

Greed is good.

The story is all about a billionaire, the protagonist, who lives his busy life with no time for emotions. He doesn't have an established or longing motive but is subjected to an extreme situation and is demanded an objective to chase for. The Act 1 provides exposition to his troubled childhood. What would happen when such a wealthy man's life is bombarded with unforeseeable situations, exacting deep hidden emotions within him? That's the story of The Game! And the story is narrated with an element of suspense and surprise constantly to a level that leaves even the viewers, to watch our protagonist encountering the unpredictable events, with amazement and timidity.

I don't care about money. I'm pulling back the curtain. I want to meet the wizard.

Apparently, the movie is concentrated on the protagonist's graph and emotions mostly. And there's a tinge of psychological aspect added to the background story of protagonist which leaves the events more interesting as the story progresses. Moreover, there are very few characters built around the protagonist, reason being the script demanding it. This does not allow for any background stories for other characters, which did not seem a shortcoming for the movie. Evidently, Michael Douglas, the lead actor, has carried the film on his shoulders, that demanded a commanding performance and made sure the script did not disintegrate at any point of the movie.

I was drugged and left for dead in Mexico - and all I got was this stupid t-shirt.

You do not need any reason for watching a thriller and when there's an element of suspense added to a thriller, there's only one thing left for you to do: Just watch the movie!

There goes a thousand dollars.

Verdict: You'll Never Know What's Gonna Happen Next!
